Vern (Vblast) White is new to our gallery and usually works in 2-D. However, we were interested in highlighting his unique and beautiful 3-D work for this particular "Gifted" exhibit. His pieces are wonderful one-of-a-kind gifts that you're not going to find anywhere else. He also has two metal sculpted "Ring Bearers" in the gallery that are a perfect functional & aesthetic piece for any bedroom.

About the Artist
Vblast was born in 1960 in Oakland, CA. A self taught artist, he began drawing and painting at an early age. The artist started screen-printing at the age of 16 in his garage to make extra money and the experience led him into the field of commercial art. For over 25 years, Vblast honed his skills in the arena of independent graphic illustration. In 2001 the artist decided to leave the world of commercial art and devote himself entirely to his own work. The abstract art of Vblast has been exhibited in a variety of northwest galleries and venues as well as being part of numerous private collections across North America.

Artist's Statement
I have been painting for as long as I have been alive, and as long as I have been painting I have always been as fascinated by the process, as much as the end product. I have devoted myself to painting highly textured non-objective abstract works that I find a joy and a challenge to create. Each piece is its own epiphany and a stepping stone in this path I have taken. It is my desire to draw the viewer into the work emotionally as well as physically, to entice them to return to the image again and again.

New work from Phresha En Route for "Gifted" Exhibit

Phresha is new to our gallery and has already managed to become a fan favorite. She is sending us some new works for our Encore Opening including the original "Upside Down" featured above, "Lost in Daydreams" (not pictured) and (4) 8" x 10" hardboard sublimation prints.

Phresha says on her FB page "I like to draw sumptuous vixens romping around with mustached kittens and ice cream cones..." A great description of what you see her focusing on in her work. We were drawn to her art instantly and enjoy the way she integrates ink and watercolor into her original pieces. She also makes her art accessible to all budgets by offering an array of various prints on watercolor paper and hardboard sublimations.

About the Artist:
Phresha was born in Romania in 1981 with a crayon in her hand. After a childhood of drawing on all the walls around, she relocated to Canada in her youth, spent some time in Toronto and now recently lives in Vancouver BC. College educated in graphic design and advertising and deeply influenced by graffiti aesthetics, Phresha's style can be described as vibrant, multi-layered, organic flows with sultry female forms, seductive, playful and sometimes scandalous. Phresha has worked with clients such as MTV, Vans Shoes, Curvy, DPi Magazine, Semi-Permanent and Smut. Her art has been featured in numerous galleries in North America, as well as featured in a documentary "Creative Violation - The rebel art of the Street Stencil" in 2007. Currently Phresha is focusing on gallery shows, commission work and sampling all the delicious sushi down the coast.

We ran across Duran's work when we were over at the Artist & Craftsman picking up supplies. The bright color pallete, the mix of folk art with contemporary, and sharp lines really caught our eyes. He also had a great collection of small works that we thought would be perfect to bring to the gallery for our "Gifted" exhibition. Duran is one of three new artists that we have brought in for this particular show. And we hope that you enjoy his work as much as we do...

Artist Bio:
Claudio Duran was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and raised in Texas before moving to Seattle in 2000. Duran is inspired by organic shapes, unexpected color combinations, machinery, nature and wildlife, anime, rust and decay, surrealism, fantasy, and junkyards. His artwork can be seen in the upcoming feature film "Fat Kid Rules the World", and in December, he will be taking part in the annual "30 Day Art Challenge" at the Tashiro Kaplan building in Pioneer Square.

Michelle Anderst Melds Flora with Human Anatomy for "Gifted" Exhibition

Along with 7 other talented artists, we have the pleasure of having Michelle Andersts' work in our gallery for the "Gifted" exhibit that runs through December 23rd, 2011. Anderst grew up fascinated with anatomy which she largely attributes to her dad's work as a ultrasound sonographer. She used to visit him at the hospital and pour over his anatomy books. She continued her passion for anatomy and has since then combined her artistic skills and scientific interest and earned her Certificate in Natural Science Illustration from the University of Washington in 2010. Anderst has exhibited in our gallery in past years and continues to be a favorite of ours. She moved back to Medford, Oregon (where she grew up) but we still think of her as a Seattlite and she will be coming up for the Encore Artist Opening on Friday, December 9th from 6-10pm.

With this series of work, Anderst melds flora with venous and bone anatomy to create an other-worldly feel. This unusual pairing when studied, becomes more familiar to the viewer, as you start to realize that Anderst is purposely coupling similarities between humans and nature. The venous attributes of human anatomy with venous structure of floral anatomy. Her paintings become a strange and beautiful statement on the interconnectedness of life on this planet.

In the piece below, "Commelina Transistor", she takes it one step further and conjoins cellular anatomy and compares it to a mechanical computer board. This is an elegant illustration of cellular and technological communication.

About the Exhibit:
Realism is making a comeback. After a few years of lying low, representational art is back with a vengeance—artists are creating figurative work with passion and finesse, but now they’re adding their own unique twists. In a fitting gesture for these tumultuous times, the artists that were chosen for “Askew” create intense, layered imagery that challenges our perceptions of “normal” and makes us think twice about what’s real and what’s not. The work is sometimes dramatic and sometimes subtle, but it’s always well crafted and wonderful. “Askew” is curated by Seattle artists, Chris Sheridan & Kate Protage and features the contemporary works of: Yvette Endrijautzki, Carl Faulkner, Zanetka Gawronski, Larkin, Matthew Lewis, Aaron Jasinski, Spyder Peterka, AJ Power, Jim Stoccardo, James Walker, and Andrea Wicklund.

CoCA & Bherd Gallery Team Up to Feature PNW Urban Contemporary Artists

The mural above was painted on location at a public all ages event with dj at Sandbox Sports, 5955 Airport Way South, Seattle, WA 98108 on Saturday, August 6, 2011, 11am-5pm. The artists who participated included 179 (who came up with the wave design), Hera, Jesse Link, CASH, John Osgood, Zach Bohnenkamp, Carlos Aguilar, Ksera and Jesse Edwards.

About the Exhibition:
CoCA and Bherd Studios Gallery are collaborating to bring attention to Pacific Northwest urban contemporary artists creating sanctioned murals and/or ephemeral work in public urban environments.

(Un)Sanctioned will educate viewers about a commonly misunderstood and perceived "outsider" art community and begin a conversation about the controversial nature of street art. The show will also celebrate the diversity of the unique PNW street style aesthetic which tends towards a cooler color palette utilizing greens and blues; often incorporating natural elements indigenous to our area; and also giving nods to Native American line form drawing and Asian pop culture.

"Inc: where wall meets canvas" closes on Friday, August 26

We didn't want you to miss the final 2 weeks of the "Inc" exhibition, as it is one of the most unique shows we have had in our gallery. Seven artists literally transformed our gallery within 4 days preceding the opening by creating murals that integrated in with their hung artwork. The installations included not only canvas, but wood cut-outs and a larger-than-life plush worm and tree stumps!

For those of you too far away to visit, here is a photo re-cap of the amazing work that Carlos Aguilar & Ksera; Zach Bohnenkamp & Sensei 23 of Matamuros; Weirdo; and Solace & John Osgood created for the show. About the Artist:
Chris Sheridan, originally from Cape Cod, MA, received his BFA from the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL and his MFA from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. Sheridan comes fresh on the heels of a recently featured video on VIMBY.com, a solo shows at Art Whino in Washington DC & Upper Playground's FIFTY24SEA gallery in Seattle, WA and shows in Finland and Monaco.

Sheridan's work takes an in-depth look at magic and religion, their symbolism and ritual, how they played a role in building our early societies, and the disconnect between these theories and beliefs and contemporary modes of thinking. Deeply psychological, laced with multiple layers of meaning and references to the trickster archetype, the work also explores the manipulative quality found in us all. Also hidden in the work is the artist's search for the soul, which he believes is the construct that holds all of these ideas together in our collective unconscious.

We're excited to announce that we have, Greg Plumis showing his fabulous photography at Gainsbourg in Greenwood (right across the street from Bherd Gallery) for our July showing. The art opening is Friday, July 8th from 6-9pm (during the Phinneywood artwalk) and will be on display through August 5th.

About the Artist:
Greg Plumis is a long-time photographer with a newly found focus: portraits. Raised by a large family – practically a Greek and Serbian village – in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood, Plumis has always valued company. This affinity for people naturally translates into his photography practice and allows him to capture subjects when they are comfortable, or naturally interacting with their environment. His love of socializing, of course, is only matched by his obsession with shooting film on old or toy cameras. If Greg had it his way, we’d never have progressed past the 4X5 camera – and our iPhones would only work with tripods. Be that as it may, for practical purposes, he splits his time between digital and film formats—sometimes even shooting Super 8, exercising his skill in both fine art and commercial projects. A soon to be graduate of the Commercial Photography program at Seattle Central’s Creative Academy, Plumis has experience shooting for editorial, corporate and nonprofit clients.

One week: no news, no internet, no social network or texting. Featuring artists from the Arts|West’s Artists Association (AWAA) in the new gallery exhibition, Unplugged Challenge, this is a fascinating insight into America’s dependence on technology and telecommunication.

“Unplug yourself!” was the request and challenge of Arts|West Gallery Director Nichole DeMent and co-curator Michele Osgood of Bherd Studios. Participating AWAA members had to unplug from TV, Internet, and text messaging for 1 full week. The result of this isolation experiment can be seen in the Unplugged Challenge in ArtsWest’s gallery from June 28 – July 24, 2011.

In this age of rapidly expanding technology and telecommunications, we rely heavily on cell phones, computers, and television for pretty much everything. This is no exception for artists. While there are clear advantages to utilizing social media and websites to promote artwork, there are downfalls as well. Artists have obviously been creating and selling artwork well before the onset of current technology. But has technology changed us as a society so much that it’s now nearly impossible to create art without it?

This generation’s contemporary artists have more technological tools at their disposal than any previous generation before them. The Unplugged Challenge shows the various interpretations from the artists’ experience and unveils intriguing insights on the plight of technology dependency. Unplugged Seattle artists include Ben Brackin, Tracy Cilona & Crystal Fosnaugh as DameBuilder, Sarah Froyland, Marty Gordon, Ada McAllister, Susan Melrath, Cass Nevada, Patri O’Connor, John Osgood, Ken Paige, Patricia Ridenour, Stephen Rock, Chris Sheridan, Siolo Thompson, Marilyn VanCleave Ullin, Glenda Weibel, Dori Westphal, and Audrey Zemke. The range of mediums varies from classic oil paintings to collage and mixed media to aerosol, and each artist brings their individual perspective on technology in the art world.

The AWAA Unplugged Challenge will be on display at Arts|West Playhouse and Gallery from June 28 through July 24, 2011. Meet the artists on Thursday, July 14th for the opening reception from 6-7:30PM. This event is free and open to the public. Drinks and light refreshments will be served.

Well the opening night show has come and gone and it was a great evening filled with a lot of familiar faces and a bunch of new people. So thank you to everyone who came out to the event! Below is a piece from each artist from the show. In this grouping of artist we have a collective concept of space, places, and area. The neat idea about those things is how the artist all got there. All the artist reference photographs that they all took. The ability to capture ideas, the correct thought provoking ideas, through photos, and to be able to manipulate, couple, and use the photos, is something that all the artist do differently. The ability to go from photos, to objects that are painted on, and the path the artist took to get there, is something that we said these artist all have unique abilities of accomplishing.

Greg Boudreau, an artist out of the Capitol Hill area, I believe has given up sleep to continuously work. He fills the majority of his studio with tables to accomplish the cutting and spraying that he does to the salvaged wood frames that he creates. His ability to find his canvas, capture his image, and to create pieces is mind bending. I really enjoy seeing the color that he uses to delineate space and light.

Kellie Talbot, an artist working out of the Ballard area, is very organized. Michele and I have a definitely learned a few things from her to make our ship run way more smooth. One of her first jobs was working as a sign painter. That is where she fell in love with typography and letters. Her ability to capture old decrepit and decaying neon and light bulb signs is one of her signatures. Her perspective painting of relic signs invites you to wonder about time and the worn.

And Kate Protage, who is working out of the Pioneer Square area (619 Western to be exact)is very process oriented, passionate, and knowledgeable about art and the creation of. I know that I have learned a few things from her from recent critiques and from just being around her when she is in the act of creating. I think her ability to create abstraction and color sensitive blurs is decisive. With a wide range of sizes and color combination containing movement and perception, Kate's work is very inviting for connoisseur of art.

In case you didn’t know, we thought we should inform you that the official Seattle Urban Art Mecca is located in Greenwood. And we like to think that the catalyst is located in a unique historical building called The Greenwood Collective (8537 Greenwood Ave N). This Friday, there are more urban artists packed into The GC than you can shake a stick at!

Plus it’s “The Big One” – a 2-dayer artwalk that was instituted 16 years ago as the “Annual Art Walk”. Here is the run-down, plus some must-sees while you are in the neighborhood. Fri, May 13th from 6-10pm & Sat, May 14 from 12-5pm.

(sub)Urban at Bherd Studios Gallery. Seattle artists Greg Boudreau, Kate Protage and Kellie Talbot’s work explores the urban landscapes throughout the Seattle area and beyond. Each artist uses photography as the starting point to their paintings, but come to a very different conclusion with their finished pieces. Talbot’s work deftly captures and documents the lost craftsmanship of American artifacts and signage and meticulously replicates the deterioration and faded glory of past times. Boudreau utilizes an excruciatingly long process of photographing and separating out the multiple layers of his photographs and hand cuts each of them into a stencil, using aerosols to recreate the scene. While Protage takes the best pieces of her photographs, melds them together and uses them to create evening cityscapes that give the viewer a hauntingly familiar feel.

Thomas uses a very difficult and laborious process to develop his photographs called Lith printing. This process limits the number of prints that can be developed and also makes each print just slightly different. He believes his photography is a way to visually reveal what truly lies within the refuse of the world. And he attempts to expose the hidden beauty of the forgotten; as well as communicating a yearning for order within this chaotic and corruptible world. His work captures a feel of long lost memories, ones that percolate up in a flash from some deep cavern in your brain.

Stop by EVO & the Timesinfinity Gallery to peep Justin Kane Elder's new work & and brand new mural. Artist reception will be held on May 6th from 6pm to 9pm during the Fremont Arts Walk. The Timesinfinity Gallery holds the first installment of the mANIMAL trilogy. mANIMAL is a new series of work that explores the ‘outlandish’ characters among the human race and in the wild. Justin Kane Elder’s current style emphasizes colorful layers of geometric shapes, which are chosen to highlight each subject’s character. He is also interested in exploring art at large scales.

The largest of his work, a Patagonia-sponsored mural, is currently on Evo’s West wall. The show is on display through June 1st, 2011. It will showcase Elder’s layered geometric portraits. The artist is having a reception on May 6th from 6pm to 9pm during the Fremont Arts Walk. Justin Kane Elder was born in Everett, Washington in 1978 and graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2002. His work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions around Seattle and also has a new installation featured in the 25th Anniversary International Childrens Festival this May.

The artist opening for "The Birds" curated by yours truly (Bherd) at Twilight Artist Collective was a real hoot last Thursday. In case you missed it, we wanted to give you a photo recap and encourage you to stop by TwAC in West Seattle before the show is over.

About "The Birds":
Eleven Seattle urban contemporary artists consider the darker side of birds, inspired loosely on Alfred Hitchcock’s classic movie “The Birds”. Featuring the works of: Zach Bohnenkamp, CASH, Ego, Mary Enslow, Laura Louise Hines, Tessa Hulls, John Osgood, Sensei23, Chris Sheridan, Erin Staffeld and Joe Vollan.

Most people see birds as fluffy and sweet songsters or a way to market your latest indie craft. However, these artists are examining the more sinister side of our feathered friends. Birds have been used as indicators of human health like the “Canary in the Coal Mine”, as well as, been seen as signs of the impending apocalypse like the recent large die-offs in the US and around the world. Pacific NW Native American’s have immortalized the Raven in stories as the Trickster, who can be mischievous and a bit of a troublemaker. And if you’ve ever been on the receiving end of a dive bombing crow, or a pissed off Canadian Goose, you know they can be quite the nasty interloper. Artist opening, Thursday, April 14^th from 6-9pm and showing through May 7^th.

We're bringing Bherd on the road this month for 1st Thursday. First, stop by and see us at the Alexis Hotel for our "Meet the Artist" series from 5-6:30pm. Siolo Thompson will be painting live during the hotels wine reception. Alexis is also a great starting place for the art walk, as they are a short walk away from where we will be next... at 619 Western, 3rd floor!

About the Artist:
Siolo Thompson is a visual artist currently living in Seattle, WA. She is interested in exploring through image the human need for narrative and our relationship to our own histories and the stories of other lives. In her paintings Siolo imbues animals and robots with totemic powers and she attempts to bring a sense of history to all of her subjects. When not working she enjoys reading, watching animation, cooking and interacting with the strange, beautiful, broken things and people that fill her world.

Thompson's work has been published in Paraphilia Magazine, Foliate Oak literary journal, and Pank Magazine. Her work has also been used as cover art for "Cut Through The Bone" short story anthology by Ethel Rohan, in addition to, "Suspended Heart" short story anthology by Heather Fowler. Thompson also works with animation and had one of her pieces featured in the International Festival of Cinema where she received 2nd place for Best Music Video in 2010.

Upfest 2011 - Zach Bohnenkamp & John Osgood Raising Funds for Mural Festival

The Zach Bohnenkamp & John Osgood are going back to Bristol, England for Upfest 2011 and they are once again raising some funds for travel expenses. They have created a limited edition, hand screen-printed 3-color piece for $35 donation. Only 50 of the prints were made and each one is numbered and signed by both artists. If you would like your print mailed to you, please provide your mailing address in the "notes" section during check-out.

About the Festival:
Upfest is the largest urban mural festival in Europe and it's growing bigger every year. Last year over 200 artists from across the globe came together for a weekend of 'Live' Urban painting spanning all types of street art and Illustration. This year they are expecting close to 300 artists participating.

In addition to the limited edition prints, Zach & John are also raising funds by doing "Mini Murals": For those clients who are keen to have a mural, but on a tight budget, we now have Mini Mural pricing. A Mini Mural is an 8' x 8' mural or similar size that is priced at $500 + tax.

The difference between a mini and a custom is:
- wall must be prepped
- no detailed sketches included
- client chooses a design based compilation of existing sketches or murals
- colors are based on paints already in the artists supplies
- no finishing clear coat.

About the AWAA Member Exhibit:
Society heavily depends on technology to get news, promote business, socialize, organize and research. While there are clear advantages to utilizing social media for promoting artwork and connecting to buyers, the downfall can be that it wastes precious art producing hours. Artists have obviously been creating and selling artwork well before the onset of current technology, it’s not as if it is a requirement to function in the art world… or is it?

If you’ve ever been at work or school when the servers go down for more than an hour, had a bad internet connection or experienced the government turning off the internet, it may have led you to wonder what would happen if there was a world-wide interruption or what if Y2K really happened? Would you experience a euphoric feeling of freedom from the unfettering of social network bondage, or would you panic and go into a hyperventilated state of withdrawal?

It is with these ideas that we propose you take the “Unplugged Challenge.” This is a 1-week break from TV, internet, social media, and texting (i.e. cell phones will be used only as phones). Being unplugged also includes no news media. You may choose to take a complete vacation and get out of town. Or you may decide that it is imperative that you stay in town because of job related responsibilities, which you can use internet and technology for, just not for social networking and personal “plugging in.” During this week, artists will create new work that will result from the trials and tribulations of being “Unplugged.”

Details and submission info:
In order to participate in this year’s annual AWAA exhibition, Unplugged Challenge, please submit 3 – 5 images of your current work along with your artist resume and bio/statement. Images must be jpegs sized to 1000 pixels for the longest length and no more than 2 MB in size and saved to a CD.

Free to Apply, but you must be a member of AWAA to exhibit.
In order to participate in the exhibition you must be a member of AWAA. Once you are notified of your selection for the exhibition, the cost for membership is $45. A portion of the membership dues is a tax deductible donation to ArtsWest Playhouse & Gallery, a non-profit theater and gallery in West Seattle, and $10 is allocated to AWAA to assist in funding monthly events, demos and lectures.

Important dates for July 2011 Exhibition, Unplugged Challenge:

Monday, March 14th - Deadline for delivered submissions (not a postmark deadline)
Friday, March 18th - Artists will be notified of acceptance into the exhibit
Monday, April 11th – Monthly AWAA meeting / artwork critique & exhibition discussion

Showing at Bherd Studios as part of "XX" a tribute to the female chromosomes. This is our 3rd Annual Ladies Show at Bherd and we're featuring: 179, Jenn Brisson, Sly Cooley, Tessa Hulls, Devon Urquhart and Redd Walitzki. All artists will be in attendance for the opening including Jenn Brisson who's coming down from Vancouver BC for the show!

"Marionette Girl" by Daniel John Williams

Hit up the Gainsbourg for a delicious cocktail and appetizer and meet Seattle artist Daniel John Williams. The Gainsbourg is a charming French Bistro and bar right across the street from our space. Daniel takes the classic expressionist style and updates it with his own modern aesthetics.

As always, Urban Light Studios, our neighbors and friends, are putting on a fabulous exhibit called "Kindred Spirits". About the artists work:

Osgood paints idiosyncratic characters with a bold palette in an urban art style. His collection of colorful and odd characters are inspired by life and the uncomfortable, forlorn and many times humorous circumstances that happen within it. He is a processed oriented painter and uses vibrant contrasting color palettes to illicit a “pop” factor. He often juxtaposes bright vivid color with depressing emotions to provide a balance to surprise the viewer. Viewers will find something of themselves or people that they know in many of his portraitures, as his focus is on conveying a certain emotion. Bherd Studios features the pop portraiture of Seattle artist, Justin Kane Elder at Gainsbourg in Greenwood. Elder simplifies images by deconstructing them into basic geometric shapes. His goal is to construct a complex design out of simple forms. Each piece focuses on individual colors and how those colors relate to the space they inhabit. Colors are piled together to create a network of corresponding objects. This talented artist is a graduate of Cornish and is a real up and comer on the urban art scene – we expect to see great new work coming out from Elder this year.

The artist opening is in conjuction with our neighborhood artwalk: Art Up Phinneywood which happens every 2nd Friday from 6-9pm all year long.

About the Artist:
I hang my hat on the west coast by I’m from Wisconsin, where I grew up riding my bike, playing in trees, and taking pictures. I still enjoy all these things, although I’m spending less time in trees these days. I try to make images that make people smile.

Also, and I mention this only because people often ask, “Lucien” is actually a French name (and I am not French) from the Latin word “lux”, which means “light”. That’s really quite a coincidence, as I feel relatively sure that my parents, careful though they are to plan ahead, could not be certain I would choose to pursue photography.

Kate Protage Featured Seattle Artist at the Alexis Hotel

One of Kate Protage's most recently finished paintings that will be hanging at the Alexis Hotel.

Stop by the Alexis Hotel this Thursday, December 2nd from 5-6pm and kick-off the 1st Thursday artwalk with our new "Meet the Artist" event. The Alexis is within easy walking distance from a majority of 1st Thursday galleries and venues. Artist, Kate Protage will be in the lobby speaking with guests and artwalk attendees about her work and will have a selection of her paintings on display through the SAM rental gallery and the Bherd Gallery "Meet the Artist" program.

For non-guests, cocktails & other beverages are available at the Bistro & Bookstore Bar and can be brought into the lobby during the event. For hotel guests, this event is held in conjunction with the guest wine reception. This is a great chance to speak with Kate about how she creates her paintings from beginning to end. You'll definitely want to ask her about her evening photo shoots while driving!

Artist Statement
I have a love/hate relationship with the cities in which I’ve lived. Everywhere I look, evidence of planning and structure exists simultaneously with chaos and unpredictability. Depending on the time of day, there are two worlds that exist in the same physical space: streets that appear gritty, dirty and depressing by day turn into an environment infused with a strange kind of lush, dark beauty and romance at night. Taking it all in can be both stressful and exciting, and I feel compelled to capture these moments and remember them.

What interests me most is the junction between sensation and fact—the way different objects come together, a combination of colors, lines and geometric shapes working together in a lyrical fashion to form intensely vivid, sometimes quite abstracted compositions. The origin of individual shapes becomes unimportant as color and texture take over, and different emotions emerge.

My paintings are the beginning of a story—a space that is somewhat recognizable and familiar, but leaves room for the story of the viewer’s choosing. Whether it feels magical and beautiful, or oppressive and ominous, that’s up to the viewer; but the plan is to take people to another place, one that’s part memory and part imagination, and provide them with a momentary escape.

I seek visual harmony, order and polish—in a tumultuous world, these are the things that keep me balanced, and they are the tools for my escape. I choose to pursue beauty.

Artist Bio:
Thompson is a visual artist, writer and animator based in Seattle, WA. As an artist she focuses primarily on the human form and always tries to incorporate a strong sense of narrative to her work. She wants each image she creates to have a story book feel to it, that draws the viewer into a different world. She often uses animals and magical elements in her paintings and tries to explore the relationships that we have to nature and the sublime. She consideres herself a bit promiscuous as an artist and often ventures into film, animation and creative writing.

For this series of new work showing at Gainsbourg, she is focusing on mechanical and robotic imagery. She utilizes a beautiful pallete of vibrant colors which heightens the fantasy-esque realms that entices viewers to escape within.

This piece is currently being exhibited in our gallery as part of the "Inside Out" show that will be up through Friday, November 5th. Auricular Apparatus is a perfect blending of the organic and mechanical that Anderst is so well known for. I am particularly drawn to this piece by the spiral shape of the cochlea backdropped behind the blooming orchid. Both the orchid and the cochlea bring about a delicate look with the mechanical apparatus and circuitry balancing out the piece with an industrial feel. Maybe this is a machine that is meant to hear the beauty of nature. Perhaps it's needed in this world, as many of us have lost our sense of union with nature? Or could this simply be a reminder of how nature and human anatomy reflecting each other.

Artist Statement:

I am currently exploring the relationships between organic structure, such as bones and beetles, to man-made structures that achieve the same functions using similar structural elements. One example is the end point of a circuit, called a lead, located on a computer board looks very similar to a nerve cell ending called a bouton. Both structures serve the purpose of communicating electronic signals but one is built by man and the other occurs naturally. I use wallpaper in my compositions to enhance and compare the elegance that I see in bones, veins and nerves. I want viewers of my artwork to think about the patterns and beauty in these parts of our bodies instead of seeing them as a reference to death.

I have learned thus far that my paintings are a direct result of my experiences as an only child. My childhood was spent in an environment free of unnecessary stimulation with many afternoons of solitude and quiet. Instead of watching television I poured over my father's anatomy books. At the age of 9, I took it upon myself to memorize all the bones in the body because they intrigued me. I spent much of my time preoccupying myself through observation which led to the depiction of scenes filled with solitude, self reflection and nostalgia.

We're happy to say that we're putting together an upcoming Do-It-Yourself screen-printing class on Saturday, November 6th from 11:30am - 2pm at our studio.

We will teach you the basics of Do-It-Yourself screen printing, including how to create a successful image, screen prep, screen exposure, and proper techniques on transferring your image onto a t-shirt. By the end of this class you will have all the information you'll need to screen-print from your home. The class fee is $30 per person and if you'd like to buy a blank shirt, we have adult sizes in men's and women's for $5 extra. You're Invited to Attend the New Aurora Mural Celebration: Sat, Oct 16

New Mural Supports Aurora Businesses and Relays a Safety Message

(SEATTLE) A new mural at 10217 Aurora Avenue N has come to life on the side of North Park Grocery. Community members and businesses along with the city and state envision Aurora as a street full of thriving businesses and shoppers – one with a vibrant, safe business center that attracts local residents to walk and bike to stores and restaurants for their weekly shopping and entertainment. To encourage this, artwork is being added along the corridor.

The 10 x 50 foot mural represents growth through sunflowers, businesses and a future RapidRide bus. Safe travel behavior is modeled by a woman on a scooter wearing a helmet waiting for a people to cross the street and the Aurora Traffic Safety Project logo in the upper right hand corner. If one looks closely they will also find familiar landmarks such as the recently restored elephant at Aurora Rents. Behind it all is the sun rising, capturing the spirit of Aurora which means “dawn.”

“My customers come in all shapes and sizes and many are working hard to improve their lives,” said Chaesun Osaka, the owner of North Park Grocery. “This mural represents how Aurora and the people who live and work here are growing and changing.”

The public is invited to come, meet the artists and fellow neighbors, learn more about the Aurora Traffic Safety Project and enjoy free coffee and light snacks.

This is the second of two murals. The first mural was a temporary installation in the windows of an empty storefront. Within three weeks of the installation being placed, the property was rented. A new location for the mural is now being sought. Zach Bohnenkamp, John Osgood and Kevin Sullivan from Bherd Studios and Matamuros were commissioned for both jobs.

Sustainable Green Lake, Greenwood Aurora Involved Neighbors (GAIN), Epic Life Church, the city of Seattle and Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WSTC) made this mural possible through grants and volunteer hours. This project is funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and through the Washington Traffic Safety Commission and Aurora Traffic Safety Project. The project was created to help Aurora gain a competitive edge in tough economic times by making improvements along Aurora Avenue; to attract attention to the business district; to improve public perceptions of Aurora; to encourage consumers to come to Aurora for their shopping needs; and to improve the sustainability and safety of the neighborhood by contributing to the walkability and bikability of the neighborhood business district.

"Inside Out" Artist Reception, Oct 8 from 6-10pm featuring Anderst, Sheridan & Vollan

Come by tonight from 6-10pm and meet the artists for this months art exhibit "Inside Out".

Presenting the urban contemporary work of Seattle artists: Michelle Anderst, Chris Sheridan and Joe Vollan. Each artists work is themed around the inner workings of the mechanical, human anatomy and the soul.

The opening reception is held in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Monthly Artwalk in Greenwood-Phinney as well as with October’s Arts Crush festival.

Anderst explores the relationships between organic structure such as bones, veins & nerves to man-made structures such as circuitry and computer boards. She’s known for pairing “the insides” with old fashioned vintage wallpaper which creates an unusual feminine elegance to her compositions.

Sheridan’s work explores the essence of humanity and the soul. His work depicts scenes from myths and folklore that teach about morality, as well as delving into the insights of human nature. His strong illustrative background provides beautifully crafted imagery on oil and canvas.

Vollan uses his signature style of surreal and macabre scenes that are inhabited by skeletal animals and robots to evoke a sense of wonderment, relevant to the fantastic and bizarre worlds he creates.

For our Piece of the Week (POW) feature we're highlighting "La Dada Gaga" by the talented pop artist Troy Gua. Frankly, I'm surprised this one wasn't plucked up the night of the exhibit opening for "You're So Vain". Which, by the way, is still on display through Friday, so if you haven't seen the show, you still have time to swing by before it's gone. This piece is particularly fitting for the exhibits theme, with the combination of the ever so vain Lady Gaga and the world renowned and classic smirking beauty, Mona Lisa. It's clear that not only is Troy talented at picking clever iconic combinations, but has a wonderful sense of humor.

BIO
Troy Gua was born and raised in Seatac, Washington. He’s a libra. He prefers the term self-actualized to self-taught, but will answer to either. Although initially uncomfortable with being labeled a Pop artist, he has recently accepted it and is growing fond of it. His latest recurring dream is of giant cheeseburgers populating the planet.

STATEMENT
Radio Edit: I’m a Pop Conceptualist producing work in a wide range of media, marrying the commercial and contemporary, conveying a glossy design aesthetic with a keen sense of humor. My subject matter deals with the layering of identities, cultural critique and commentary, celebrity obsession and the universal human need for recognition. (For the extended re-mix click HERE).

For our Piece of the Week (POW) installment we are featuring a print by Brian Thies, a Seattle urban artist and comic book illustrator. "Mrs. Aloof" is one of two limited edition prints that we currently have in our gallery for the "You're So Vain" exhibit (in addition to a original oil on canvas painting entitled "Agent XZ-35"). I enjoy the contrast in this piece between the darkness of her hair and the white space left on almost half the page. The light playing off her hair and the shadows on her face ellicit a photographic essence to the piece. Her facial features and eyes do appear to be lost in her own thoughts, unconcerned about anything going on around her, thus her fitting title... Mrs. Aloof.

A small bit about Brian Thies:

The comic book is an art form still very much in it's infancy. As an artist, as a storyteller it's one of the few platforms I feel I can make an honest expression. It's a dialect that is direct and intuitive, sexy and monstrous.

If you haven't seen Chris Crites' work before, it's time to get acquainted. I had seen his work around Seattle and was very interested in meeting him and finding out more. It seemed like everytime we'd go to one of his openings, we would just miss him - funny timing apparently on our part. We even walked into a gallery down in San Francisco on a visit and ran into his work in a group show called Dark Americana. I felt a little taunted by this accidental viewing (ha, ha, here is that artist you've been wanting to meet).

When Kate Protage & Chris Sheridan were putting together the line-up for the "You're So Vain" exhibit and they confirmed that Chris was in the show, my first question was: is he going to be there for the opening? Aha! I would finally meet him. (It was very nice to meet you Chris).

For our POW (Piece of the Week) installment I selected "Breaking Into Various Dwellings. Theft". From the toussled hair, to the folds in his jacket and that look of regret on his face, the detailing of this piece gives it a 3-d appearance. The piece as I mentioned, is part of the "You're So Vain" (you probably think this art is about you) exhibit that runs through Friday, October 1st. Crites has an additional piece in the show among several other excellent Seattle artists (and 1 from SF). Please stop by before the show ends.

Artist Statement

Years ago I saw a book of black and white crime photographs from the past. I found it amazing. The characters and crime scenes looked like surreal glimpses into the history of human interaction. Much more intriguing for me were the mug shots. Portraits of people who had just been caught. Despair, frustration, anger – so many expressions could be read on the faces. Each one of these images has a story. Often times I have no idea what the real story is, but it’s hard not to make one up. One of the reasons I paint them is to bring out another possible story, for people to look at and think about. The majority of the images I base my paintings on are from the 1890’s through 1950’s.

Originally I began using charcoal and white conte´ crayon on paper bag. The way the wrinkles, folds and texture added to the piece really appealed to me. In 1999 I painted my first 4 mug shots in acrylic on paper bag with a limited palette of 5 colors each. Paper bag has been my main substrate ever since. Brightly colored acrylics have a different effect on the brown bag than on a typical white backing.

I try to bring new life to these practically discarded portraits of criminal and human history. Using an everyday, disposable item as the surface gives new life to the bag as well. It is my hope to get people thinking about the past, their present, and how we all affect both.

About the Exhibit:

Seattle artists Kate Protage and Chris Sheridan team up to curate their 2nd show at Bherd Studios Gallery in September. "You're So Vain" looks at more than 10 different artists' interpretations of portraiture in the modern art world, and how their technical, stylistic and symbolic choices reflect the "truths" of their subjects.

Protage and Sheridan have chosen to display a wide range of styles and genres in "You're So Vain," with work ranging from urban contemporary to pop surrealism to classical, and everything in between. Artists address a variety of different thematic concepts behind modern portraiture-humor, vanity, morality, spirituality and social commentary to name a few-and reveal the fact that portraiture is not bound to a single, tightly defined space in contemporary art. It is everywhere, and can mean many things.

"You're So Vain" runs from September 10th to October 1st at Bherd Studios Gallery in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle.

I fell for this piece the moment I saw it. It's delicate and ephemeral imagery illicits that feeling of vanity and hunger for luxury that gives such fleeting satisfaction. Not that I would know the kind of luxury that's entailed in Redd's piece, but I think most women have exprienced "retail therapy" and the temporary bubble of self confidence a new outfit, purse, shoes, etc., give you. However, less than a day later, you come to the realization that your boyfriend is still sleeping with that two-bit hussy, you still want to lose 10 pounds and that damn zit on your forehead still rearing it's ugly head.

There is a sister piece that is also in the show called "Specimen 2 - monstrum modae", the two pieces together are a perfect pairing, both encased in a gilded ornamental frame. You must come by and see these dahhhling...

About the Artist:

Pattern shaping beautiful surfaces. Sweet disguising sharpness.

Redd has worked with multiple genres of the arts,ranging from painting, sewing, digital media, video animation, photography, and ball-jointed-doll faceups to name a few. Her elegant style is a signature characteristic of her work; featuring much of her former teaching, discipline and background. Redd graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2007. She is a working artist originally from Germany,now living in Pioneer Square (Seattle’s artist district).

If you know us, you probably have been hearing some rumblings about this project for a couple months now. We are proud to say that we have put out our 1st session of P.T.S. (aka "Peep This Studio") featuring Solace Wonder. Take a moment to check it out:

I call myself an urban artist or street artist because my work is influenced by street culture and highly inspired by graffiti. While graffiti is normally rooted in letterforms, I lean towards the character design element. My pacific-northwest surroundings instill a respect for nature that is personified in my work. Via organic textures, vibrant colors, and a graphic painterly approach, I attempt to meld city life with the tranquility of uninhabited lands. Through a blend of mediums, aerosol propelled and acrylic, I concoct my background landscapes and finish them with the character design. I call my characters "wanders." The wanders are unique in perspective and rely on body language over facial expression to tell their story. I am always looking to progress my style and increase my stable of characters while challenging conventional mediums. The mediums most utilized at this time are canvas, large-scale mural production, custom vinyl toys, original plush toys, and live painting.

About P.T.S. Sessions
P.T.S. is the latest project of Bherd Studios Gallery as a way to document and promote Seattle urban contemporary artists and the scene that is continuing to blossom in our area. We are currently working with artists who have previously shown in our gallery and our goal is to produce a monthly P.T.S. Session that will be posted on our blog and promoted through our social media.

The three of them are collaborating on a install piece that they will be unveiling for the show. Pecha Kucha: "Evil Schemes/Evil Deeds"

Pecha Kucha began in 2003 in Tokyo as a way for young designers to network and showcase their work. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat," it consists of a simple presentation structure: 20 images x 20 seconds each. Six artists from different disciplines will follow this format centered on the theme "Evil Schemes/Evil Deeds," with the artists talking about each slide as it is displayed. Presenters include painter and independent curator Chris Crites, photographic-based artist and curator Nichole DeMent, figurative oil painter Chris Sheridan, performance artist Ilvs Strauss, multimedia artist and poet Nico Vassilakis, and urban contemporary painter John Osgood.

Portrait Challenge

One page, one picture of a notable model, six empty boxes and a challenge to draw the model. This is the essence of the Portrait Challenge, started in 2002 by artist and security chief at the Frye Art Museum, Ryan Molenkamp. Bumbershoot attendees will have the opportunity to draw their unique interpretation, realistic rendering, insightful caricatures, or just silly pictures and conceptual musings of the model, or opt to participate as the model and see how other people render their portrait.

Seattle Street Biennale 2010 is a selection of Seattle's most respected street talent, featuring large site-specific works by Katsu, Aerub, Ego, Angel179, Baldman Watching, and Joey Nix, plus other local artists will contribute smaller pieces, making this an installation that takes viewers on a visual experience that is confusing and beautiful. Reflecting the vast subculture known as street art, the methods employed span from spray paint to wheat paste.

Sean Wilkinson (Wilky) is a long time Seattle resident and multi media creative artist. He has an extensive background in illustration and currently heads the creative team at Funko, a local toy company where he has spent the last ten years designing toys and bobble-heads.

Recently he has been excited about opening Tasty, a retail gallery/store on Greenwood avenue in Seattle, with his wife Sheri. This new venture has become his latest creative outlet. Sean also really enjoys cereal.

We will teach you the basics of Do-It-Yourself screen printing, including how to create a successful image, screen prep, screen exposure, and proper techniques on transferring your image onto a t-shirt. By the end of this class you will have all the information you'll need to screen-print from your home. The class fee is $30 per person and if you'd like to buy a blank shirt, we have adult sizes in men's and women's for $5 extra. The maximum number of people per session is 8, so sign up now to save your spot!

Nose Go is a Philadelphia-based artist with a passion for illustration and media arts. He mixes fine art with a contemporary style to deliver highly energetic work. His designs feature an assemblage of patterns, vibrant colors and characters derived from his imagination and his surrounding environment. Nose holds a B.F.A. in Film and Digital Video from the University of the Arts. Nose also studied illustration at Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Fleisher Art Memorial, and The University of the Arts. His work has been published in several books, magazines, newspapers and documentaries. He currently directs McJAWN, an online arts and culture magazine of which is the co-founder, along with Wen Vo.

This exhibit is based around the artists influences of cartoon, comic and video game culture. Through their influences, they have created their own unique characters that have their own stories. About the Artist:

Chris Brett is a mixed media artist from the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. About the Artist:

Hailing from the California Bay Area, Augie Pagan moved to Seattle to attend art school with the hopes of becoming an illustrator and/or comic book artist. Fate had another plan however, and Augie soon found himself working in the world of video games. After many years of creating art for various video game companies, Augie decided to test the shark filled waters of a freelance artist. Since then, Augie has been self employed as a freelancer, and has been slowly making his way into the alternative art scene by pursing gallery work. His art has been displayed in group shows locally as well as LA, SF, and NY. Augie also hates the term "alternative art" and can't stand writing about himself in the third person.

This piece was started at the May Art Up Greenwood artwalk. John enjoys goading fellow artists into painting with him in his studio and during this time, Solace was a good sport and added in his trademark "Wanderer" character. After a month of working over the piece, John pulled out this colorful and unusual bird which he named after Solace. This piece is currently at Bherd Studios and can be seen at the upcoming July artwalk on Fri, July 9th from 6-9pm.

Artist Bio

David Hoang explores the foundations of popular culture, de-contextualization, re-contextualization and convergence. Hoang’s work investigates other influential modes of story telling – comic books, film, gossip, literature, music, social media, television, and video games – as they relate to one’s understanding of identity and worldview. Like a DJ, he mixes and re-mixes his materials to create visually representative narratives on the picture plane. Through drawing and painting, Hoang perpetually explores his bicultural upbringing and ethnocentric influences – interweaving experience, understanding, and exploration.

David Hoang was born in Longview, Washington in 1983. He is of Vietnamese and French descent, and is a first-generation American. He received his BFA in painting at Central Washington University in 2006. Hoang’s work is shown nationally throughout the United States. He currently lives and works in Seattle, Washington.

Artist Statement

I am two parts cultural ecologist, one part DJ. My drawings are a repository for other influential modes of storytelling: literature, film, music, television, gossip, text messages, myth, inside jokes, video games, comic books, personal experience and the occasional romantic walk on the beach. I find the picture plane to be a flexible reality in which I can use original and existing icons and images to ask questions about how narrative relates to one’s understanding the self (identity) and one’s understanding the world (worldview).

We're on our 3rd installment of our POW (piece of the week)feature. And this week we are featuring Tim Kapler who is one of the "Urban Portraiture" artists in our gallery this month. His artwork incorporates incredible line-work and detail and he has on exhibit currently a large selection of small pieces ranging from $40 - $70 a piece. We were taken back by his "Mutations" piece that we're featuring this week because of the strong vibrant colors and the half alien - half human portraiture.

Kapler is a Tacoma-based artist working with found and neglected materials. He has shown locally at Kulture Lab, Urban Art Festival, The Pantages, Sanford & Son, Metro Coffee, Mad Hat Tea Company, as well the Rebar, Bherd Studios and the B.Y.O.A. Show in Seattle.

As part of our "Urban Portraiture" exhibit that runs through Fri, July 2nd, we currently have a special guest artist in our gallery, UK artist, Daniel Lumbini. We wanted to feature his piece "A Small Study of Desire" as our POW (piece of the week). Lumbini has shown his work outside of the UK in New York, and for the first time, is showing his work in Seattle. I find his work reminiscent of Conor Harrington with clear detailed images mixed in with loose and out of focus strokes. Artist Statement:

My work is a contradiction of everything I've been taught: when you're a kid you're told not to paint outside of the lines; when you're all grown up they tell you things in real life done have any outlines. So I guess my work could be best described as a contradiction of everything I don’t know…

This probably explains my interest in playing with the formula of the human figure and experimentation of human physical awkwardness, as much as I’m keen to bare our psychological flaws. Nothing says imperfection like people and their baggage, myself included, and I guess my style of painting leaves my own flaws exposed also…

My awkwardness and lack of attention to detail is what I hope I’ll be remembered for.

Seattle Artists John Osgood & Zach Bohnenkamp at Upfest in Bristol, UK

After several hours of travel anyone and everyone has a point where they can no longer go. That was me when I got the hostel I was staying at. I needed a bed, a floor, something to lay on. I arrived just a bit early though. Check in was a 3pm and it was only 1pm. So I ditched my bag and told myself to do 2 hours of exploring. I got about an hour into looking around and turned back and went back to the hostel, which was adjoined with a bar, and had a few drinks. Finally I got into my room and crashed. After about 17 hours of sleep, I got a knock on the door and Zach & Kendra showed up. These were our first pints, all together, of many over the week we were there...

Zach and Kendra showed up and they were ready to roll. They rallied and kept on trucking. (Nice work you two!) The first place we went to was View Gallery. This gallery was showing a handful of the artist that were going to be a part of Upfest. This is also where we met Wild & Martyna. As they were outside I notice when Martyna was taking a picture she had a nice little blob on her camera. Similar to what Zach had on his. Zach went up and asked her about it, we all started talking, next thing you know we already had our BFF's of Bristol.

Another friend that we met was Jimmy, who acted as our tour guide for Saturday night. He found us a really nice place to eat and interesting people to talk to. Jimmy also introduced us to "Thatchers Cider". Jimmy, like Martyna and Wilde, was very generous, kind, and hospitable. That is one thing about Bristolians, they are nice people and willing to help.

This was our hostel. Our room was right over the bar (Awesome!). Some interesting fun facts about our room, matresses 2in thick & pillows filled with sand. And we were given a nice little treat on the last night we were there with Mr. Machine gun laugh sitting out on the patio right outside our room yuckin it up.

Here is the beginning of our piece. When we got there they informed us that we were given 8' x 12' instead of 8' x 8' which we planned for. More room, yes please.

Finished deal. Cool thing about this piece is that the person that was suppose to be to left of our mural, never showed. So Zach and I collaborated with Rojo, from Spain. Working with Rojo was awesome. He let us use his stencil on our piece and it really pulled the pieces together.

Jose Rodriguez III on exhibit for "Urban Portraiture" June 11 - July 2

In this series of paintings for "Urban Portraiture" Rodriguez tried to capture the essence of Seattle with some of its urban settings and a few indiginous animals of the Northwest. His paintings are based on photographs that he took in various location in and around Seattle. His approach was: what would the city be like if all the people moved out and left everything behind? What would the face of a city filled with animals look like when they are able to move back in and make it their home again? Free to do as they will, but left with an altered habitat to roam.

Note: Racoons are able to identify an object before they touch it because they have specialized hairs above their claws. Their paws are very dexterious and have been known to open jars, doors and complex locks.

Jose Rodriguez is a Seattle based artist with an interest in organic subjects. Much of his paintings provide provoking color contrast and a strong sense of perspective. Usually painting in oils, Rodriguez has also been known to use many different mediums in the process of painting. Formally trained in illustration he finds further interest and challenges in the fine arts.

Opossums (Didelphimorphia)
Note: Opossums are N. America's only marsupial mammal. The mother carries her young in her marsupian until they are 2-3 months old and then they are carried on her back for another 1-2 months.

We've started a new weekly feature on our blog where we will be presenting a piece of artwork from a Bherd artist. This week we are presenting Kellie Talbot's piece that was recently exhibited in the May show "A Sign of the Times". Her work captures the essence of modern day international trade and commerce. It's easy to imagine these containers sitting down on the docks at the Port of Seattle. Kellie lives in the Ballard neighborhood and many of her pieces are based on vintage signage and locations around the Seattle area.

As one of our artists in residence, Kellie's work may be purchase directly through Bherd Studios. We will soon have a wall dedicated to small works of our artists in residence in the coming weeks.

About the Artist:

Kellie Talbot was born in Hawaii and as a daughter of a career marine lived on both coasts growing up.

Her first jobs, in a print shop and as a sign painter, developed her love of typography and design.

Kellie moved to Seattle in 1989 and finished school in the design program at Seattle Central Community College. After graduation, she worked as the graphic designer for Cornish College of the Arts.

Since 1993 Kellie has worked extensively as an illustrator and designer for the snowboard industry in addition to being the Art Director for Signal Snowboards since its inception in 2003.

She is currently represented by Bherd Studios Gallery & LaFamilia Gallery in Seattle.

She lives in Ballard with her husband, a duck and their six toed cat.

About the Artist:

John Osgood is an urban contemporary artist and muralist who grew up in Edmonds, Washington. He graduated with a BA from WSU with a minor in Fine Arts. He is a 2008 Artist Trust Edge Graduate; was selected in 2009 by the Arts Council of Snohomish County as their poster artist for their annual “Fresh Paint” art festival and most recently was selected along with another team member of Seattle Mural Art to attend Upfest, the largest Urban Art Festival in Europe (they are only 2 of 5 artists representing the US in Bristol, UK). Osgood has shown in multiple galleries in Seattle and the state such as ArtsWest, Halogen Gallery, Twilight Artist Collective, Chase Gallery, Centennial Center Gallery and outside of the area in California and Florida.

Osgood paints idiosyncratic characters with a bold palette in a graffiti art style. His collection of colorful & odd characters are inspired by life and the uncomfortable, forlorn and many times humorous circumstances that happen within it. Osgood was recently recognized in a feature story in the Seattle Times for his mural work (along with 2 other artists) on a transformational memorial mural in Greenwood after the neighborhood was targeted by an arsonist. He also has interior & exterior murals sprinkled in other neighborhoods around the city. Osgood is the co-owner (along with his wife) of a studio and gallery called Bherd Studios in the Greenwood neighborhood where he curates shows monthly for other up and coming PNW contemporary artists.

W3AVE Urban Art Collab Events: April 29 & 30

S3A presents a two night/two neighborhood event called “W3AVE”, bringing together 18 Seattle urban artists for a live collaborative art session the first night, followed by an opening reception and auction the next night.

The live painting event on the first night will take place at the Henry Art Gallery for their “Open Floor” program on Thursday, April 29th from 7-9pm. The reception and auction for the finished collaborative pieces will take place on Friday, April 30th from 6-9pm at City Hostel Seattle in Belltown. Both events are free and open to the public.

The artist line-up includes: Ego, Stacey Rozich, Augie Pagan, Weirdo, Solace, John Osgood, Kevin “Sensei23” Sullivan, Zach Bohnenkamp, CASH, Ninjagrl, Joe Vollan, Mat Savage, PaperMarbleS, Jeremy Gregory, Justin Hillgrove, Mike Capp & Mike Gardner. The artists have been divided into six teams of three. Each artist will show up to the live event with a 12”x16” canvas that they have already started to work on. During the live event, they will swap their canvas with each of their team members and contribute to their canvases while the audience watches. By the end of the live event, each team will have three completed collaborative pieces to be auctioned off the following evening.

In addition, both events will include: DJ EMC and the Acid Unicorn dropping contemporary beats, cooking up an engaging blend of dance grooves and known and loved favorites - from yesterday, today and tomorrow.
