Monica HW Choy's statement on "This Place Is A Prison":
I have been a gallery curator for two years now, showing mostly in Portland and Seattle. Though I tend to gravitate towards low-brow/pop surrealism painting, I am trying something different with this next show by curating a different medium, photography.

I have always been fascinated by a photographer’s ability to capture amazing images while considering so many different variables. Composition, lighting, subject, and mood are often so unpredictable – not to mention having to manage all the lenses, equipment, and settings involved. It amazes me then, when someone my age can capture fragments of life in a way that really makes me want to pause and wonder at it. Anyone can pick up a camera and take a snapshot, but few can capture a moment in a way that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also invites you to listen to the story behind it.

I selected these three photographers because of their similarity, not in style, but in subject matter. All three come from urban areas (San Francisco and Seattle) and much of their work portrays the lifestyle and environment surrounding young adults living in big cities. City life is often glamorized by movies, tv shows, and "small town" folk, but the concrete jungle can be a cold place. I have chosen to focus these photographers on the sometimes-stifling aspects of city life in "This Place is a Prison."

"This Place is a Prison," step's into everyday places and everyday beauty. Texture's and environments from actual urban settings. Explore a day into one girl's life. Turning life into fantasy and dreams into reality. Leave's you wondering... is this place really a prison or a playground.

Newest John Osgood Painting...

Here is the latest and greatest. Its called "Faces no.9". It's a 89" x 41" Acrylic,oil, and spray on Canvas. Right now this painting is hanging in a home, built by Pb Elemental, down in the Mt.Baker area along with nine other paintings of mine. Art Dive at West Seattle Summer Fest

Our Friends at the Twilight Artist Collective are heading up "Art Dive" and we wanted to spread the word on this Call To Art:

In an effort to make Summer Fest (www.westseattlefestival.com) more authentically an arts, music and community celebration, this year we will be introducing "ART DIVE"! Art Dive will be a flea market like area designated for local artist to sell their goods. 8' x 2' Tables in the Art Dive tents will be just $125 for the three day weekend. The Art Dive will have PRIME LOCATION on California Avenue just South of the North Stage! ALL artist making goods in the USA are welcome to apply, so please pass the word along.

May, so far...

With a handful of photos on the camera and some fun times that have happened, I thought it was a good time to give a 411 on what's been going on lately. (Yep I really did drop the "411".) So the recent run of the never ending schedule started on May 1st. Bherd Studios was invited by a great non-profit group called "The Positive Project" throwing a fund raiser. The Positive Project is a group that educates and documents the experience of people around the world that have been diagnosed with HIV. That night they had a casino night with a jazz band and our "art gallery" at the Space Needle. It was a fun evening filled with gambling, music, drinks, art and a fabulous view. This is what our set up looked like.



Next line of order was the set up for the Greenwood Art Walk. This was my second art walk in Greenwood. The last time I was in the Greenwood Art Walk was about four years ago. I was asked last minute to fill in for someone and didn't really know what was going on. This year as a resident of Greenwood I tried it out to see how my neighborhood faired in the art walk arena. This picture below was taken at the Greenwood Collective. And if you haven't heard of the this place you should keep your ears open, it's where it's at!


This is the set of paintings that I had across the way from the Greenwood Collective at Northside Moroccan Grill.


After running around like a chicken with our heads cut off for too long, Michele and I decided that we needed to get out of town for a bit. So for our two year anniversary we went over to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. We stayed in a nice room that had it's own hot tub and we just RE-LAXED.
We were there for three days. On the second day we were there, we went on a whale watching tour. There were no whales but we did see Team Zissou documenting some marine mammals while we were checking out the dolphins.


Here's a picture of a white-sided dolphin. I guess it was a rare sighting for these dolphins in this area of water. It was pretty cool to see these dolphins playing with us while they were swimming around. They covered a lot of territory pretty quick -- they're fast little buggers.


Here is an island that is owned by the creator of Oakley sunglasses. This island was once used for bringing exotic rams, deer, and sheep to the island. This picture doesn't have any animals in it which I find amazing because they were all over the place.

Slideluck Potshow Seattle and CoCA, are excited to announce the upcoming Slideluck CoCAshow!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will be an extra special Slideluck with a month long exhibition of works by selected artists in September at CoCA's Ballard gallery space inside the Shilshole Bay Beach Club. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, September 4, 2008, as well as a separate potluck and slide show the following week (date tbd).

How do you get involved?

Call for Submissions:
This will be a juried show. Since this is a physical art show as well as a slide show, the submission deadline is FIRM.

The submission deadline is JULY 26, 2008. Artists will be notified of acceptance by August 4th. Only themed work will be considered for the CoCA art show. Further details are TBA.

THEME: GENERATION(S)
Be creative with the theme. It can lead down varied paths of history, change, future, creation, cycles, technology, family, society, etc. Collaborations are always encouraged. Consider adding a narrative element to your work and don't forget to edit!
