Stop by EVO & the Timesinfinity Gallery to peep Justin Kane Elder's new work & and brand new mural. Artist reception will be held on May 6th from 6pm to 9pm during the Fremont Arts Walk. The Timesinfinity Gallery holds the first installment of the mANIMAL trilogy. mANIMAL is a new series of work that explores the ‘outlandish’ characters among the human race and in the wild. Justin Kane Elder’s current style emphasizes colorful layers of geometric shapes, which are chosen to highlight each subject’s character. He is also interested in exploring art at large scales.

The largest of his work, a Patagonia-sponsored mural, is currently on Evo’s West wall. The show is on display through June 1st, 2011. It will showcase Elder’s layered geometric portraits. The artist is having a reception on May 6th from 6pm to 9pm during the Fremont Arts Walk. Justin Kane Elder was born in Everett, Washington in 1978 and graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2002. His work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions around Seattle and also has a new installation featured in the 25th Anniversary International Childrens Festival this May.

Kate will be back in our gallery in May for "SubUrban" along with Kellie Talbot and another selected finalist on the Art Walk Awards list, Greg Boudreau.

About the Art Walk Awards: In 2011, four winners will each receive $1,000 and a profile of their artwork in City Arts magazine. Together with our 2011 partners, the Art Walk Consortium, businesses and galleries that participate in neighborhood art walks can nominate a favorite piece of art for each month. Each spring, summer, winter and fall, we narrow dozens of submissions down to six finalists, and then throw a party in their honor (with delicious and free Blue Moon seasonal beers, music, food and more). Anyone attending the event gets to vote for the winner and we'll hand out the award that night.

The artist opening for "The Birds" curated by yours truly (Bherd) at Twilight Artist Collective was a real hoot last Thursday. In case you missed it, we wanted to give you a photo recap and encourage you to stop by TwAC in West Seattle before the show is over.

About "The Birds":
Eleven Seattle urban contemporary artists consider the darker side of birds, inspired loosely on Alfred Hitchcock’s classic movie “The Birds”. Featuring the works of: Zach Bohnenkamp, CASH, Ego, Mary Enslow, Laura Louise Hines, Tessa Hulls, John Osgood, Sensei23, Chris Sheridan, Erin Staffeld and Joe Vollan.

Most people see birds as fluffy and sweet songsters or a way to market your latest indie craft. However, these artists are examining the more sinister side of our feathered friends. Birds have been used as indicators of human health like the “Canary in the Coal Mine”, as well as, been seen as signs of the impending apocalypse like the recent large die-offs in the US and around the world. Pacific NW Native American’s have immortalized the Raven in stories as the Trickster, who can be mischievous and a bit of a troublemaker. And if you’ve ever been on the receiving end of a dive bombing crow, or a pissed off Canadian Goose, you know they can be quite the nasty interloper. Artist opening, Thursday, April 14^th from 6-9pm and showing through May 7^th.

Bherd Gallery at 1st Thursday Artwalk: April 7 starting at 5pm

We're bringing Bherd on the road this month for 1st Thursday. First, stop by and see us at the Alexis Hotel for our "Meet the Artist" series from 5-6:30pm. Siolo Thompson will be painting live during the hotels wine reception. Alexis is also a great starting place for the art walk, as they are a short walk away from where we will be next... at 619 Western, 3rd floor!

About the Artist:
Siolo Thompson is a visual artist currently living in Seattle, WA. She is interested in exploring through image the human need for narrative and our relationship to our own histories and the stories of other lives. In her paintings Siolo imbues animals and robots with totemic powers and she attempts to bring a sense of history to all of her subjects. When not working she enjoys reading, watching animation, cooking and interacting with the strange, beautiful, broken things and people that fill her world.

Thompson's work has been published in Paraphilia Magazine, Foliate Oak literary journal, and Pank Magazine. Her work has also been used as cover art for "Cut Through The Bone" short story anthology by Ethel Rohan, in addition to, "Suspended Heart" short story anthology by Heather Fowler. Thompson also works with animation and had one of her pieces featured in the International Festival of Cinema where she received 2nd place for Best Music Video in 2010.

You're in luck if you missed our "Book Club" show based on the book Good Omens, the nice and accurate prophecies of Agnes Nutter, witch by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett. We will have a 1-night encore showing at 619 Western on the 3rd Floor in the hallway outside of Kate Protage and Chris Sheridan's studio.

About the Show:
17 Seattle urban contemporary artists provide their visual interpretations of the book Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett. This darkly humorous cult classic pokes fun at the end times and nearing apocalypse. We found this a particularly timely piece of literature for a 2011 exhibit, with predictions of the end days right around the corner. Featured Seattle artists include: Nick Beery, John Belli, Mike Capp, Cris Cook, Duffy, Justin Kane Elder, Eddy Lee, Matt Lewis, Xavier Lopez, Eric Osborne, John Osgood, Augie Pagan, Kate Protage, Chris Sheridan, Brian Thies, Siolo Thompson and Brian White.

Upfest 2011 - Zach Bohnenkamp & John Osgood Raising Funds for Mural Festival

The Zach Bohnenkamp & John Osgood are going back to Bristol, England for Upfest 2011 and they are once again raising some funds for travel expenses. They have created a limited edition, hand screen-printed 3-color piece for $35 donation. Only 50 of the prints were made and each one is numbered and signed by both artists. If you would like your print mailed to you, please provide your mailing address in the "notes" section during check-out.

About the Festival:
Upfest is the largest urban mural festival in Europe and it's growing bigger every year. Last year over 200 artists from across the globe came together for a weekend of 'Live' Urban painting spanning all types of street art and Illustration. This year they are expecting close to 300 artists participating.

In addition to the limited edition prints, Zach & John are also raising funds by doing "Mini Murals": For those clients who are keen to have a mural, but on a tight budget, we now have Mini Mural pricing. A Mini Mural is an 8' x 8' mural or similar size that is priced at $500 + tax.

The difference between a mini and a custom is:
- wall must be prepped
- no detailed sketches included
- client chooses a design based compilation of existing sketches or murals
- colors are based on paints already in the artists supplies
- no finishing clear coat.

This Friday, March 11 starting at 6pm, in conjunction with Art Up Phinneywood.



Our friends and neighboring gallery, Urban Light Studios at The Greenwoood Collective, are exibiting 30 urban artists in their "Bots Vs. Beasts" show curated by Nick Beery. It's a killer line up of visual artists, plus there will be live music from local 8-bitSci-FiHip-Hop group Supercommuter!



And of course, you don't want to miss Book Club, at Bherd Studios Gallery. Visual art based on the cult classic, "Good Omens, the nice and accurate prophecies of Agnes Nutter, witch"
