"Awake to a New Aurora" Mural Unveiling on Tue, Mar 23rd

Mural in progress shown above.

On Tuesday, March 23 from 6:30-7:30pm join the Aurora Avenue N neighborhood in celebrating the unveiling of the first of two murals. Sustainable Green Lake, Greenwood Aurora Involved Neighbors (GAIN) and the City of Seattle envision Aurora as a street full of thriving businesses and shoppers – one with a vibrant business center that attracts local residents to walk and bike to stores and restaurants for their weekly shopping and entertainment. To encourage this, a temporary installation of artwork is being placed in the windows of an empty storefront. A second location is being sought.

Sustainable Green Lake received funding to do a mural from a grant through the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. GAIN provided some additional funding. The project is modeled after a similar and successful one done in the Columbia City neighborhood in the 1990s.

Zach Bohnenkamp, John Osgood and Kevin Sullivan from Seattle Mural Art, a local muralist team whose most recent work was installed next to Taproot Theatre after the arsons, have been commissioned for the new Aurora murals. The mural features the theme “Awake to a New Aurora” with a vibrant scene transitioning from green space to a rising sun backdropped with the downtown cityscape view as you go over the Aurora Bridge.

“This is a great project bringing together artists, community groups and businesses to improve Aurora," said Andy Leong, property owner of 7615 Aurora Avenue N.

Come watch the mural unveiling, meet the artists and your fellow neighbors and enjoy free pizza and soda.

Today John and I took a trip over to Bremerton to check out the new art banner installations and find his banner. In mid 2009 Washington artists were juried by the Bremerton Arts Commission to feature their work up and down the main streets of downtown Bremerton.

We took this video to highlight some of the other artists that are featured on the banners as well...

Mural at site of Greenwood arson to be unveiled this Thurs, Dec 31

Mural celebrates artistry and creativity of neighborhood

SEATTLE – December 29, 2009 – Taproot Theatre Company and Seattle Mural Art will unveil the mural created for the site of the October 23 arson in Greenwood on Thursday, December 31, at 11 a.m. Taproot Theatre Company commissioned Seattle Mural Art an affliate of Bherd Studios to create a mural to cover the safety fence where the Eleanor Roosevelt Building stood until the arson. Concerned about leaving a hole in the core of the Greenwood business district, Taproot Theatre, which owns the property, saw the mural as a way to add beauty to the neighborhood and facilitate more art. The mural celebrates Greenwood’s character and artistry, and demonstrates its resilience in the wake of the fires.

Seattle Urban Mural Artists "Add Spice" to Aurora

Zach Bohnenkamp & Kevin "Sensei23" Sullivan
snap some final picts of the ProSki Mural.

We were excited to see a recent article in the North Seattle Hearald Outlook feature the work of the new Matamuros + Bherd team at ProSki Shop on Aurora.

"Artists add 'spice' to Aurora with mural"
By Jessica Van Gilder
Staff Writer

Though it was their first artistic collaboration, once the tops of the spray cans were popped off, the visions of Bherd Studios Gallery artist John Osgood and Matamuros mural artists Kevin Sullivan and Zachary Bohnenkamp just clicked.

In under 15 hours, the three artists spray-painted a 20-by-40-foot mural for Seattle Pro Ski Service, 8954 Aurora Ave. N. - an urban mural complete with an abominable snowman, snowy mountains and the Seattle skyline.

"Actually, one of the best working experiences I had with somebody was this job," said Osgood of the collaboration. "We all have similar interests and style - where the light's coming from, color, compositions, lines. Everything sort of flowed together."

The artists have teamed up and started a new website to continue to work together on future mural projects: SeattleMuralArt.com

Free Art Friday is Back Tonight in Greenwood!

"Left Turn" is going out to the peeps in the greenhood tonight. If you happen to be around we just dropped the FAF piece. Here are a few photo hints to help you find it...

There is a huge island in Alaska that this bar is named after...

Not far from that is the drop point...

The piece has found it's temporary hiding place until someone notices that there is a FAF on the loose!

Trick or Treat Greenwood!

It all started out last Tuesday with a sneak preview opening and artist presentation for our Soapbox exhibit. Michelle Anderst is giving an overview of her work on display. We had some great feedback from attendee's of the sneak preview show and plan to do more of these for 2010.
