About the Exhibit:
Realism is making a comeback. After a few years of lying low, representational art is back with a vengeance—artists are creating figurative work with passion and finesse, but now they’re adding their own unique twists. In a fitting gesture for these tumultuous times, the artists that were chosen for “Askew” create intense, layered imagery that challenges our perceptions of “normal” and makes us think twice about what’s real and what’s not. The work is sometimes dramatic and sometimes subtle, but it’s always well crafted and wonderful. “Askew” is curated by Seattle artists, Chris Sheridan & Kate Protage and features the contemporary works of: Yvette Endrijautzki, Carl Faulkner, Zanetka Gawronski, Larkin, Matthew Lewis, Aaron Jasinski, Spyder Peterka, AJ Power, Jim Stoccardo, James Walker, and Andrea Wicklund.

We're excited to announce that we have, Greg Plumis showing his fabulous photography at Gainsbourg in Greenwood (right across the street from Bherd Gallery) for our July showing. The art opening is Friday, July 8th from 6-9pm (during the Phinneywood artwalk) and will be on display through August 5th.


About the Artist:
Greg Plumis is a long-time photographer with a newly found focus: portraits. Raised by a large family – practically a Greek and Serbian village – in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood, Plumis has always valued company. This affinity for people naturally translates into his photography practice and allows him to capture subjects when they are comfortable, or naturally interacting with their environment. His love of socializing, of course, is only matched by his obsession with shooting film on old or toy cameras. If Greg had it his way, we’d never have progressed past the 4X5 camera – and our iPhones would only work with tripods. Be that as it may, for practical purposes, he splits his time between digital and film formats—sometimes even shooting Super 8, exercising his skill in both fine art and commercial projects. A soon to be graduate of the Commercial Photography program at Seattle Central’s Creative Academy, Plumis has experience shooting for editorial, corporate and nonprofit clients.

November: DIY Screen-Printing Class on Sat, Nov 6 from 11:30am-2pm

We're happy to say that we're putting together an upcoming Do-It-Yourself screen-printing class on Saturday, November 6th from 11:30am - 2pm at our studio.




We will teach you the basics of Do-It-Yourself screen printing, including how to create a successful image, screen prep, screen exposure, and proper techniques on transferring your image onto a t-shirt. By the end of this class you will have all the information you'll need to screen-print from your home. The class fee is $30 per person and if you'd like to buy a blank shirt, we have adult sizes in men's and women's for $5 extra. If this class date doesn't work for you, we will offer another class towards the beginning of next year. 17th Annual COCA 24 Hour Art Marathon & Auction

CoCA will hold its 17th annual Art Marathon and Auction December 4 and 5 at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center, on 4272 Fremont Ave N. CoCA pioneered the concept of the 'endurance' art event beginning in 1992 and has gradually opened the Marathon to include a variety of media in addition to the usual painting. The event remains the region's only 24-hour extravaganza, a spectacle that over the years has come to define CoCA's edgy mix of emerging and established artists.

For 24 hours, from 9am Friday to 9am Saturday, 20 artists are locked in a room with nothing but their art supplies. Sure, we bring in a trough of gruel and a barrel of grog every so often, but the art is what it's all about. Drawing, Painting, Sculpting, Hot Waxing (Encaustic), Photographing, Video-Taping, Versifying, Editing, and who knows what for sure. Over 100 works of art will be spontaneously created, with some of the artists engaging in impromptu collaborations and improvisations with each other's materials. Proceeds are split between the artists and CoCA.

You, too, can be a part of this pandemonium. Come down to the Fremont Abbey on Friday and watch the artists make art. Then come back at 6pm on Saturday night and buy it at three silent auctions followed by a live auction.. It's that simple. We'll give you some gruel too, although you'll have to buy the grog from us (it IS a fund-raiser, after all). The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) invites all artists and creative professionals to join us on Wednesday, December 16th at Pravda Studios for a FREE seminar discussing copyright law for those who need it most. Doors open at 6pm and the seminar starts at 7pm. Arrive early and network among Seattle’s creative community while enjoying a bounty of delicious appetizers and beverages.

After the social/networking hour four intellectual property lawyers will speak to the audience in a discussion format. This format, using plain English, is designed to cut through the legalese and demystify the steps you can take to better protect your work. These steps are applicable to many artistic disciplines. 2nd Annual Snowmen on Parade in Greenwood-Phinney

Kate Protage at Conor Byrne this Saturday

This Saturday, November 14th, is the Ballard Art Walk and Kate will have some work up at Conor Byrne Pub--come by and have a beer or a soda with her.

In a Seattle Weekly review in August, David Stoesz speaks of Protages recent works "The magic of the paintings lies in how a few sharp-edged blobs of paint can so economically transmit an atmosphere of nocturnal mystery, and so precisely indicate the side of a bus, a haze of light from a storefront, or a couple standing in the shadows."

It's a wonderful description of the talented hand behind the artwork. Don't miss seeing her this Saturday from 6-9pm!

Osgood Custom Design Tee Available tonight at Deli in Pioneer Square

Yesterday, I was in my Cultural Communications class (since I'm still trapped in high school and all) and we were discussing "nonverbal communication". My professor brought up the topic of clothing, asking which ones of us woke up in the morning and thought "How do I want to dress? What do I want my clothing to communicate?" Nobody raised their hand...except me. But really, it's no suprise considering they all wake up and change from their pajamas to sweats and throw on whatever t-shirt they find.

Defiantly, I told the professor that, "Yes, I definitely think about what I want my clothing to portray that day." But really, I guess my classmates' lack of style wouldn't bother me so much depending on which t-shirt they threw on. Some mornings I really couldn't care less and get dressed purposelessly...besides to avoid arrest or public embarassment. I would be more than satisfied if their chosen shirts spoke a message or point of view...much like Deli's new artist series does.

Deli, in Pioneer Square, is launching its line of artist designed t-shirts. Local artists such as Brad Strain, Adrien Miller, Michelle Anderst, and John Osgood have designed clothing that will be unveiled tonight at the Deli Clothing store. Located at 87 Yesler Way, this hybrid clothing boutique-art gallery is holding a kick-off event from 5:30 to 9:30 tonight, November 5th.

There are a few special things about John's shirt design. He says this design is one he drew in Alaska while visiting family...which I guess is special. But what's really special is that, I want this shirt! And I'm the kind of person who tries my hardest not to buy "just t-shirts". So if its one that even I want to own, its definitely got to be something great.

Screen-printing by hand at Bherd Studios

When you buy that t-shirt in the store--whether it shows your favorite sports team or some other mass manufactured name brand--you must wonder how that image got on that shirt. While I don't know how a big company might do it, today I learned how John does it - and how anyone could do it right out of their own house.

Today began with plastic transfers of some images that are ultimately going to be used as a wheatpasting project for a piece of artwork for "urban constructions" in January. With three lamps fastened to chairs, John showed me how to expose the images onto the screen. Atop this "OSGOOD" sweatshirt, we exposed the screen to the light of the bulbs, exposing everything not covered by the black lines of the plastic transfer.

After that we finished the printing process by running paint over our exposed screen. With smooth black fabric paint, a health insurance card, and a long screen squeegee, we spread layer upon layer of black paint through the screen and onto our paper. The end product, after some practice and some mistakes, yielded these printed images.
