EL KARTEL

An American, in Canada, surrounded with Mexican wrestling ambience. If this was the scenario (and you were american) you would be on Robson Street, in Vancouver, B.C. at "EL KARTEL". http://www.elkartel.com/ .What an awesome little jem that just happened to fall into mine and Michele's lap's when we were on our way to go enjoy some sushi at Oysi Oysi. El Kartel has been open for 4 years and they do a rotating art exhibit every 6 weeks. In February they are having 40 artists for a custom shoe exhibit.

Filled with clothes, shoes, one of kind hand painted hats, clothing assesories, collectable toys, and a rotating collection of artwork this store had a little bit of everything. Also, the DJ was throwing down some funky cuts that definitely got me to move my feet in a fashion that might be considered dancing.

The artwork that was being shown was done by the Woodpile Collective http://thewoodpilecollective.blogspot.com/ .You should check out their blog, it has some pretty good photos of their work.
In the background is one of the co-owners of EL KARTEL. His name is Pablo. A very nice man that helped us out on our adventure looking for galleries. (Bruce is the other co-owner of EL KARTEL).
This is a pic of a mini mart that we saw after our EL KARTEL photo shoot. If you ask me this sort of looks like an Amsterdam Red Light District sort of business. Looks kind of shady.
This car had a working fountain on the hood.
( Husband: Alright Honey, I just glued the plastic lobster and the 8x10 picture of Harry Carey to the bumper. Right next to the stuffed Ernie & Bert dolls and the eight wood spoons. What else should we put on the bug besides this complete set of dominos, a hockey puck, and this half bag of granola mix?

Wife: Oh, I don't know. What about a water fountain on the hood?

H: Honey, you're a genius! I knew the bug was still missing something. Boy, the bug is almost done. Once the bug is complete we can take some time and try to figure out why the kids are embarassed to be seen with us.)

Route 99 on on way back into Washington State. On this bright, sunny winter day the reptition in the scenery was too beautiful and a photo needed to be taken.

Thanks to Bruce an Pablo for giving us some ideas on some galleries to go to and for letting Michele and I ask some questions and take some photos of their store. Finding that store was definitely one of the many highlights of our quick two day vaction in Vancouver B.C.

Marty Gordon

"Breakfast with Jesus"
5" X 7"
Collage on mat board
2007
$100
Showing at the Seattle Art Party at the Blue Star Cafe and Pub
This piece grew from an idea I had about actually sitting down to breakfast with Jesus. What would you talk about? What would you eat? Obviously, Jesus has access to the best pancakes around.

"Search and Seizure"
4" X 4"
Collage on canvas.
2007
$20
Showing at Twilight Artist Collective in the West Seattle Junction.
This piece is part of a series I am doing on small canvas. I limit myself to three visual images, usually two main subjects and a word balloon. These are quick to do and produce a lot of opportunities for humorous juxtaposition.

Our Speak & Bherd Blog - New Direction

We at Bherd Studios would like to widen our scope on our blog. We're looking to add NW artwork to this area on a regular basis. The purpose is for local upcoming artists and their fans to share new artwork. We also have upcoming group exhibitions and are always on the lookout for new artists. The focus is on NW artists (Vancouver BC, Oregon & Washington) who are not already represented by a commercial gallery. The type of artwork that we would like to feature is contemporary, with an urban edge. Any type of medium is acceptable (photography, painting, screen-printing, sculpture, etc.).

Guidelines:

  • 1 to 2 pieces of artwork sent in jpeg or gif format.
  • Must have a description of the artwork that includes: artist name, medium, size, year produced, if it is available for sale and where it currently resides and artist website (if they have one). If the art is on display or will be in an upcoming show, please include that. Optional: Tell us about an upcoming art show, event, venue, website, blog, magazine, etc.
  • Tell us what you like or what is interesting about the pieces you are submitting (1 to 2 sentences)
  • Art can be submitted by the artist or by a fan of the artist. If you are a fan of the artist, please let us know that you have permission from the artist to submit their work to our blog.
  • Art fans may submit an artist interview with up to 5 questions – be creative and have fun. Include a picture of the artist and artists studio if you choose to do this.
  • Send submissions to: speakandbherd@hotmail.com

Thank you and we look forward to our new blog direction for 2008!

Door Mural

This picture is of a mural that I am working on right now. It is located on the back door at Neptune coffee in Greenwood. I am almost done with the piece. I all I have to do is make a logo for Neptune coffee, which is going on the coffee cup, and then a logo for Bherd, which is going to be under the cup.

Free Art Friday

If you happen to be in the Greenwood area this morning you might have stumbled across our 1st "Free Art Friday". The first piece of art, in this every other friday event, was a three colored silk screen on paper called "1st In Line 2 Kiss The Angel no.2". There were only nine pieces that I put up, so if you got one, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. So keep your eyes open, because the next one is going to be in two weeks.

Last Friday Night @ Neptune Coffee

So we had another free silk screening event last friday night. We held the event at Neptune coffee (which is located in on Greenwood Ave in Greenwood) which turned out to be a good place to have it. There was more than enough people at the coffee shop that night to keep both Michele and I busy for the two hours that we were there. It was a blast screen printing shirts for people and answering everyones questions. Hopefully everyone enjoys their new "Yin Yang Bird Fish" design and wear their shirts proudly. Keep your ears peeled for future free silk screening events coming up in the near future.

Our next show is "Love Is A Battlefield" which will be held on February 9th, 5-9pm @ Bherd Studios. If you haven't made it to one of our shows yet, I think now is time. I can't wait for this show to get here because Michele and I have had this group show planned for a while now and this is going to be our first real group show. And new things are always fun.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns feel free to write us back. Michele and I are always interested in people's inquires and excited to tell people about what is going on with Bherd Studios

I hope everyone is doing well.

(And now back to my deep knee bends. ...997, ...998, ...999, ...1000! Done.)
