Greenwood-Phinney Contemporary Art Gallery Listings

I bet you didn't know that we had 8 different art galleries in the Greenwood-Phinney neighborhood. It used to be that our neighborhood was known for it's antique shops, but more and more the evolution of our neighborhood is heading towards the arts.

Along with the art galleries listed below there are many more art loving venues in our neighborhood who loyally display and support local artists on a monthly basis including: Neptune Coffee, Chocolati, Strut, Diva Espresso, Herkimer, Naked City Taphouse, Pig & Whistle, Rockwell Realty, Balderdash Books & Art, Greenwood Sip & Ship, Makeda Coffee, Oliver's Twist and Wayward Coffee. Many of these venues participate every month in the 2nd Friday artwalk called "Art Up Greenwood-Phinney".

Taproot Theatre Commissions Seattle Mural Art Team for Greenwood Mural

Taproot Theatre has commissioned our team "Seattle Mural Art" to create a mural installation on an 8 ft high by 89 foot long temporary wall in honor of the businesses that were lost after the arsons in our neighborhood. Above is an in progress shot of the main focal point of the mural symbolizing the re-birth of the Greenwood neighborhood - the phoenix rising from its ashes. When first contacted by Taproot, the team got together to brainstorm ideas that would best resonate with the community and Zach Bohnenkamp, one of the 3 artists, came up with the idea of the Phoenix. Other features of the mural will include a scene from the annual car show, a fireman rescuing a PAWs cat, and a call to action for the monthly artwalk "Art Up Greenwood-Phinney".

You may recognize the handiwork of these three artists: John Osgood, Kevin "Sensei23" Sullivan and Zach Bohnenkamp from the recently installed mural at ProSki on Aurora. Neighbors who have heard about the mural have been waiting to see the artists working on the wall outdoors, but the artists have been stealthily cloistered in a nearby location and the mural will not be totally revealed until the unveiling ceremony TBA soon.

Seattle Mural Art is an affliate of Bherd Studios Gallery located in Greenwood.

Art Up Greenwood-Phinney December Artwalk + Snowmen on Parade

Greenwood-Phinney is celebrating their 1st anniversary of Art Up G-P monthly artwalk. Please come over to our hood and check out the great artwork and events that are happening this month. The artwalk is Friday, December 11 from 6-9pm.

2nd Annual Snowmen on Parade: You can bid online right now, or you can attend the auction on Fri. Dec 11th starting at 6pm at Space: A design build collective (7601 Greenwood Ave N - enter off 76th). Take a snowman home that night that was decorated by a local Seattle artist.

Assemble Gallery & Studio is proud to announce that our Grand Opening party is scheduled for the same night as the Phinney/Greenwood Artwalk, on Friday, December 11th! We will be partying from 6pm – 9pm in celebration our opening, the holidays, and all of our old & new friends! Avians Alight (former member of Damien Jurado) will be playing music for us, plus come for treats, coffee and drinks, plus a button-making station, fun coupons and great fun! Also, come to meet our first gallery artist, Katya Usvitsky, who is traveling all the way from New York City to cut the imaginary ribbon.

Urban Light Studios is having their 1 year anniversary and are featuring their "year in review". They are bringing back the artists that they exhibited throughout 2009.

Band Vibes Studios features "Holiday Bizarre: an urban art show of epic proportions!" with over 30 Seattle Urban Contemporary artists showing works of 12" x 12" or smaller priced for the holiday gift giving season.

Bherd Studios Gallery presents "Urban Presence" featuring the urban art works of Solace, Ego, Cash, Sensei23, Zach Bohnenkamp, Ninjagrl, Akimbo and John Osgood.

And you won't want to miss the Naked Pig BBQ team on the main floor of the collective. They will be serving up their award-winning fare of Brisket, Pulled Pork and Chicken sandwiches for a suggested donation of $3. Proceeds benefitting the Greenwood Fire Relief Fund.

ABOUT The Greenwood Collective
The Greenwood Collective is a creative event and work space located in the heart of Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood. This group of independent creative professionals exchange knowledge, resources, and inspiration in an effort to strengthen their overlapping communities. In addition to the 3500 square foot architectural masterpiece on the main floor, you will find five unique studios and galleries in The Greenwood Collective underground area including Bherd Studios and URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS. These galleries are always open during the second Friday of each month (6-9pm) for Art Up Greenwood-Phinney.

Seattle Urban Mural Artists "Add Spice" to Aurora

We were excited to see a recent article in the North Seattle Hearald Outlook feature the work of the new Matamuros + Bherd team at ProSki Shop on Aurora.

Though it was their first artistic collaboration, once the tops of the spray cans were popped off, the visions of Bherd Studios Gallery artist John Osgood and Matamuros mural artists Kevin Sullivan and Zachary Bohnenkamp just clicked.

In under 15 hours, the three artists spray-painted a 20-by-40-foot mural for Seattle Pro Ski Service, 8954 Aurora Ave. N. - an urban mural complete with an abominable snowman, snowy mountains and the Seattle skyline.

"Actually, one of the best working experiences I had with somebody was this job," said Osgood of the collaboration. "We all have similar interests and style - where the light's coming from, color, compositions, lines. Everything sort of flowed together."

17th Annual COCA 24 Hour Art Marathon & Auction

CoCA will hold its 17th annual Art Marathon and Auction December 4 and 5 at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center, on 4272 Fremont Ave N. CoCA pioneered the concept of the 'endurance' art event beginning in 1992 and has gradually opened the Marathon to include a variety of media in addition to the usual painting. The event remains the region's only 24-hour extravaganza, a spectacle that over the years has come to define CoCA's edgy mix of emerging and established artists.

For 24 hours, from 9am Friday to 9am Saturday, 20 artists are locked in a room with nothing but their art supplies. Sure, we bring in a trough of gruel and a barrel of grog every so often, but the art is what it's all about. Drawing, Painting, Sculpting, Hot Waxing (Encaustic), Photographing, Video-Taping, Versifying, Editing, and who knows what for sure. Over 100 works of art will be spontaneously created, with some of the artists engaging in impromptu collaborations and improvisations with each other's materials. Proceeds are split between the artists and CoCA.

Marc Lindsay, mixed-media, Patti Bowman, encaustic, Seb Barnett, mixed-media, Geoff Garza, mixed media collage, Lorna Nakell, painting, Wesley Wozniak, painting, Irene Wood, painting, Pedro Valdivia, painting, Aaron Haba, sculpture, Sylwia Tur, sculpture, Thomas Hurley III, painting, Miguel Edwards, painting, Waldo Vega, painting, Zak Alexander, painting, Sean Hurley, painting, David Francis, mixed media, Craig Vandenbosch, Adam Spencer, Aaron Huey, and William Brody.

You, too, can be a part of this pandemonium. Come down to the Fremont Abbey on Friday and watch the artists make art. Then come back at 6pm on Saturday night and buy it at three silent auctions followed by a live auction.. It's that simple. We'll give you some gruel too, although you'll have to buy the grog from us (it IS a fund-raiser, after all).
